Prescribing information states that Derma-Smoothe/FS is applied to the scalp and either left on overnight or for at least four hours before shampooing hair.

Derma-Smoothe/FS comes in the form of an oil.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Derma-Smoothe/FS lists side effects including burning, itching, irritation, and dryness. Topical corticosteroids can also cause skin atrophy (thinning, wrinkling, and visible depressions of the skin), allergic contact dermatitis, secondary infection, stretch marks, and thickening of the skin.

Rare but serious side effects listed for corticosteroids include high blood sugar and reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression (a dysfunction of the adrenal system).
